Members of a joint illegal immigration enforcement team has busted three suspected immigrant smugglers after a drophouse was discovered Monday in a south Phoenix residence.
Two undocumented immigrants held inside the house escaped through a second floor bathroom window.
They went to a neighbor's house and called police to say they were being held against their will, an Arizona Department of Public Safety news release said.
Phoenix Police responded and found 14 people at the house.
One of the suspected human smugglers tried to blend in with the others.
Two more suspected smugglers exited the house with one carrying a loaded weapon, DPS said.
All three suspects were arrested and taken to Maricopa County jail. T
hey will be charged with conspiracy to commit human smuggling, DPS said.
The remaining 14 undocumented immigrants including 12 men and two women were being questioned by detectives and will be placed in the custody of federal immigration enforcement officials, DPS said.
Several of the undocumented immigrants claimed they were held at that location for the past nine days.
They also told authorities they had not eaten in three days.
One man told detectives the smugglers threatened to take him out to the desert and shoot him if his family in Mexico didn't come up with thousands of dollars in ransom money, DPS said.
